Keynote Speakers:

Disability Is A Mindset….How does this sound?
Throughout Sam's 27 years he has faced more adversity than most people face in a lifetime. From achieving his dream in sports to overcoming a deadly illness and founding a global Non-Profit that has impacted millions of lives. Despite his successes, people have still tried to label him as disabled simply because he was born different. This never sat well with Sam. Sam discusses how to overcome the perceptions of others and uses a captivating presentation and physical demonstrations to display how to overcome the disabled mindset. He will provide the audience with steps they can take to not only overcome the daily obstacles that life throws at you but to chase the dreams that you have always thought were impossible.
Sam Kuhnert was born with only one hand. Due to his perseverance, dedication, and leadership, he became a successful athlete, role model, and coach. At 18, he founded the national nonprofit organization, NubAbility Athletics. From the age of 3, Sam fell in love with the game of baseball. He worked hard to perfect his one-handed hitting and glove transfer on his own time, well after his team's practices had ended. Sam believes that everyone deserves the chance to discover their courage and learn life through sport. It was then his vision for the camps he holds nationwide was born.

Getting into the Weeds: FAQ’s in a Medical Cannabis State

Cannabis legalization is happening. Some of us feel this is happening at a breakneck pace, while others feel it has taken far too long. Something we share is having many questions about the messages that bombard us on a daily basis. In this presentation, Fred Rottnek, MD, MAHCM, board-certified in both family medicine and addiction medicine, will bring his experience to answer common FAQ’s about medical cannabis, marijuana vs. hemp, legalization, and decriminalization, product safety, and quality, what we know and what we don’t know about short-term and long-term use and other concerns that all of should consider in states that have legalized cannabis use.

Dr. Rottnek is a Professor and the Director of Community medicine at Saint Louis University (SLU) School of Medicine and Medical Director of the Physician Assistant Program. His clinical practices have included correctional healthcare, homeless healthcare, community clinics, and addiction medicine. He teaches in the School of Medicine, the PA Program, the Interprofessional Education Program, and the Center for Health Law Studies. Dr. Rottnek is the Medical Director for the Assisted Recovery Centers of America (ARCA), as well as the Program Director of the Saint Louis University Addiction Medicine Fellowship.

CBD & Epilepsy - The Gift of A Normal Life

Mitch Meyers

Mitch spent most of her professional years in Marketing and Brand building for major companies. Anheuser-Busch, Ralston Purina, Energizer Batteries, Motorola, and many others. After building a marketing agency in St. Louis for 15 years and retiring in 2003, she became interested in medical cannabis after observing it in Colorado. She led a team of Investors to apply for and receive a medical cannabis dispensary license in the Chicago Area in 2014. Seeing the real-world benefits they were providing to patients, she applied for 1 of the cultivation and manufacturing licenses in Missouri to treat Epilepsy patients with CBD. This experience gave her company, Beleaf Life's Oils, the ability to introduce cannabis as a natural plant medicine to skeptical Midwesterners. Educating the public about cannabis and what it could do for health in our region became her mission.

In 2018, Missouri passed Amendment by the vote of the people to make medical cannabis legal in the state. Mitch led another team to apply for licenses to participate and was very fortunate to receive multiple licenses to cultivate, manufacture and sell products through their dispensaries.

Cannabis has been used for thousands of years throughout the world without the devastating effects that many prescription drugs can produce. Hear the types of patients that are benefiting in Missouri and how someone can qualify to participate in our state's medical cannabis program.

Terri Jordan

Terri Jordan is the owner and creator of “The Color-Coded Chef” recipe packs and cooking kit. Our family believes in the power of therapy. Like every parent, I wanted my child to acquire basic life skills, like cooking, despite his challenges. But at age 16, my son did not understand 1/4 cup or 2 tablespoons, so that was taking away his ability to follow traditional recipes. Then the “Aha Moment” happened: He understands color! Terri is also a MOM – Mother On a Mission. For 19 years she has been breaking down barriers and creating the sequence steps to help her own son continue to succeed.

Sequencing: The Path to Life Skills

Sequencing may seem obvious is some areas of our lives, like putting on socks before putting on our shoes. Or washing dirty clothes before you iron them. But sequencing can also be used to teach behaviors, prioritize tasks, learn key information, and become a foundation as we encourage our children to develop work and life skills.

Sequencing and Cooking Success

Sequencing may seem obvious is some areas of our lives, like putting on socks before putting on our shoes. Or washing dirty clothes before you iron them. But sequencing can also be used to teach the valuable life skills of cooking, nutrition, discipline. Come join us for hands-on experience to make a few of the recipes that are included in the kit, use the tools that make it easier, share your recipe success with other participants and let us know your “aha” moment.

Special Needs Trusts: Financial and Asset Protection for Families of Children with Special Needs

Presented by: Vince Taormina

Many families of children with special needs worry about their child’s long-term financial and health care needs. Care can be expensive, especially over the course of many years. Luckily, government programs like Supplemental Social Income (“SSI”) and Medicaid offer income, housing, and health care support for loved ones with special needs. However, because many of these programs are means-tested, an inheritance or income could result in disqualification for applying or already qualified recipients. This session covers a few different topics: First-Party Special Needs Trusts, Third-Party Special Needs Trusts, Pooled Special Needs Trusts, and ABLE Accounts, and aims to equip families with the best solutions to protect the financial and personal well-being of their loved ones.

Vince Taormina is an attorney focused on providing families with quality, comprehensive, and affordable estate planning solutions. With his hands-on and personalized approach to the law, he aims to empower families with the requisite knowledge and tools necessary to guard their assets, plan for the future, and protect their legacies.

Innovations in Technology First

Presented by Wanda Crocker

Imagine a world where your every waking moment includes someone watching you…that is the reality for many people who have developmental disabilities. Traditional service delivery considers paid staff as the initial and sometimes only solution. Technology First is a philosophy that considers technology as a solution to support needs before considering in-person supports. Sometimes the solutions are simple and sometimes complex. Technology can assist families in supporting their loved ones to have more independence in their own homes, support mom and dad’s impromptu date night without a paid staff, and plan for passing family homes onto the next generation by being assured that the person can live independently where they are. It can assist people in pursuit of their dreams and realize their talents and skills or interact with their environment and community much like every other person in the community. Technology First is not Technology Only – many times a combination of both are required. In this session, we’ll explore the technology first movement, bash some myths and talk about how the movement impacts all Missourians regardless of ability.

Wanda Crocker is the Director of Provider Relations and a Technology First Champion for the Missouri Division of Developmental Disabilities. She has a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Human Resource Development and Management. Wanda supported people in Missouri for over 24 years as a contracted service provider, Self-Directed Services Direct Support Professional, Case Manager, advocate and various state roles in provider development and technology. She is also the proud mother of two children with developmental disabilities.

Healthy Relationships, Sexuality and Abuse Prevention

Navigating the world of romantic relationships has support for people with intellectual disabilities can be a daunting and uncomfortable task. The companionship of all types, that is healthy, is beneficial in anyone's life but it can be difficult to trust others and the people being supported to make good decisions. People with intellectual disabilities are more likely than any other population to be sexually assaulted. With access to education and information about boundaries and bodies, people with disabilities can make better decisions about how they act and who they pick to be in their life. In this presentation, attendees will understand what puts people at risk and what can prevent abuse.

Jessica Naslund is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator supervisor who teaches and provides therapy for all individuals. She is an adjunct professor in the UMSL SUCCEED transitional program for individuals with intellectual disabilities teaching healthy relationships and sexuality. She is in private practice seeing individuals both neurotypically developing and those with various abilities. She helped to create the first-ever healthy relationships, sexuality, and abuse prevention grant-funded program through the YWCA SHADE program in St. Louis which has resulted in the education of individuals, support staff, law enforcement, and medical staff about the intricate layers of support needed to prevent exploitation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for 7 years. As a founding member of the Safe Circle Coalition, a collaboration of 19 St. Louis disability provider agencies and trauma agencies concerned with preventing sexual abuse against people with developmental disabilities since its inception in 2010; she was able to fertilize a grassroots sexual abuse prevention that garnered monies that have trained allies throughout St. Louis. A systemic approach to primary prevention emphasizing pleasure to prevent exploitation has been integral to the movement and the message that she has delivered on the national level as well as in her community. From the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit to the International Abuse, Violence and Trauma Conference, AASECT Sexuality and Disability Institute, and numerous AASECT Conferences in the last decade; the message does not change, sexual expression is mentionable and manageable for all.

Guardianship Alternatives: Practical, Less Restrictive, Less Expensive Means to Assisting Adults with Special Needs

This session will examine the need for guardianships and conservatorships and the legal effects of the same upon the rights of an individual. For many, simple alternatives can be utilized to avoid the necessity of obtaining guardianship of an adult child which is much less expensive, restrictive, and intrusive, while also allowing the child to maintain all of his or her legal rights. Powers of attorney and other simple releases preserve all of the adult child’s rights while allowing parents access and decision-making authority. In addition, there are no court costs or litigation fees, so the cost is a fraction of that in establishing guardianship through the courts.

Attorney Jasmine Chen’s estate planning practice focuses on helping families enhance their lives today and secure their futures tomorrow. She excels in guiding her clients through the often-confusing maze of financial and legal decisions to create plans that ensure the well-being of each of her clients’ families and the accomplishment of their cherished family goals. Her considerable legal expertise includes, among her other practice areas, family protection, wealth preservation, and values-based planning, particularly for families with minor children, including special needs children. Whether you are married or single, with a traditional family or a blended one, just starting out or looking back on a life well-lived, Jasmine will help you craft a plan that achieves your goals for your loved ones today and for years to come.

Positive Boost of Animal Therapy

This session is about the numerous benefits of animal therapy. Primary focusing on equine therapy, the emotional, physical, and mental benefits. A better understanding of how a simple pet like a goldfish or exposure to animals can give something that humans cannot always: The chance to be heard without any judgment, the chance to be free to express oneself without any regret or remorse.

Hi, my name is Ellie Uebel, I am recently married, work at an equine therapy riding center, and support staff for an adult with Down Syndrome. I am also a self-advocate for Asperger’s Syndrome and General Anxiety Disorder. Ellie’s love for animals, especially horses, has led her to volunteer and work at Exceptional Equestrian, a therapeutic horsemanship organization.

Applying Ivan Pavlov's Philosophy to Learning "How to Re-Train the Brain Using Sensory Cues"

My company was founded using a modified version of Pavlov's philosophy. Through my research, I have found that students (and adults) over time, develop physiological responses to sounds. Ex: Words like "fractions" "test" "quiz" induce a physiological response that often mimics pain and momentarily halts the brain processes making it difficult for students to absorb the information that follows these sounds. Adults have similar reactions to words such as "Taxes" "Audit" and "Flood". For the moments following these words participants experienced moments of "brain fog" and were unable to comprehend the material presented. These behaviors are the result of a series of negative experiences that have tied the word or sound to an emotional/physiological response. This presentation explains why this happens and how we can re-train the brain to have a positive reaction to the same sound and override the previous negative responses.

My name is Jessica Beeson. I am a certified teacher in Missouri, and I received my degree from Lindenwood University in 2011. I worked in the school system at the college level from 2007-2015. In 2012, I licensed my own tutoring company after noticing a significant decrease in performance and reading comprehension level of the incoming students. I also began noticing a decrease in successful understanding when certain words were used throughout a lesson. Being a researcher, I began studying linguistics and conducting experiments to determine a list of common trigger words as well as their associated behaviors and reactions from the students. I am now the CEO and owner of 2 companies and am expanding my role in speaking engagements. I have participated in several informational and motivational speaking engagements throughout the Saint Charles area and would like to expand more into the St. Louis area.

Transforming your Team to be trauma-responsive and social emotionally trained staff: The LOGOS WAY

Having a team of educators and staff who all operate from the same philosophy and are on the same page is critical to having the best programming for the students in their care. This presentation will describe how a well-known program in the St. Louis region not only built a team that believes but also provides ongoing reinforcement to ensure the staff are trauma-responsive and operates from a social-emotional learning lens. The session will provide tips and strategies to build such a team in your school/ organization.

Dr. Kathy Fenger is a 1979 graduate of LOGOS and now the Head of School. She often says leading the school that helped her succeed is a dream come true. She has also held the position of Executive Vice President, Adolescent Therapist, Special Education Coordinator, and English Head at Logos. Prior to LOGOS, she worked as an Educational Coordinator at Christian Hospital Northwest. In 2012, Kathy graduated from the University of Missouri-St. Louis with her Ph.D. in Education Leadership and Administration. She also previously earned a B.A, in Psychology, an M.A. in Counseling, and a lifetime teaching certificate in Special Education from Webster University. Dr. Fenger serves as living proof of the success of LOGOS, demonstrating to her students that there is no limit to what they can achieve.
